IEC/TC111 - Environmental Standardization of Electronic Products and Systems

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) created technical committee TC111 in 2004 to address a standardization gap in emerging environmental legislation of Electronic Equipment. There are no current recognized standards and practices required for implementation and enforcement of emerging environmental legislation restricting use of hazardous substances in electronic products and other Environmentally Conscious Design (ECD) requirements. Lack of standards creates uncertainty and risk for international trade. Environmental legislation is affecting electronic equipment producers selling into Europe, Japan, China, US and other regions.

The TC111 work program currently includes development of international standards or specifications under the following work program:

  • IEC 62474: “Materials Declaration” (WG1)
  • IEC 62430: “Environmentally Conscious Design” (WG2)
  • IEC 62321: “Test Methods of Six Hazardous Substances” (WG3)
  • IEC TS62476: “Guidance for assessing compliance of finished goods” (with respect to restriction of use of hazardous substances)
  • IEC Publicly Available Specification (PAS): “Sample Disjointment” (HWG3)
  • IEC 62542: Standardization of environmental aspects - Glossary of terms
  • IEC 62545: Environmental Information on Electrical and Electronic Equipment
